EMCR news 12 July from Miles Andrews

Dr Miles Andrews, CCS EMCR rep

Update from Dr Miles Andrews, CCS EMCR Representative
12 July 2022

It’s been a little while since our last newsletter, so here is your list of programs, events and grants that might be of interest to you, together with links to Monash ECR portals and gateways.

For more programs, please check out the ECR Portal. You’ll need to be logged-in to your Monash email/Google account to access the material. You might also want to check in with the Faculty (FMNHS) ECR Information Gateway from time to time, as it is constantly updated with information about funding, professional development opportunities, events and more.

Please feel free to reach out with any comments or suggestions via this Google form, regarding things you would like to see included in this newsletter or to give us an idea about any other programs/seminars that have been run or that you would like to see.

I’d like to thank Dr Meaghan Clough for her excellent work in the role of CCS EMCR representative over the last few years as she has now stepped down from the role. I look forward to welcoming a few new EMCRs to join the CCS EMCR Committee in the near future, which will significantly enhance our capacity to respond to the needs of EMCRs across our uniquely diverse school and many campuses.

Thanks,

Miles (miles.andrews@monash.edu)

CCS EMCR representative

A reminder if you’re new…

If you are a new ECR at Monash and are feeling a bit daunted by where to start and what to do, check out the ECR induction module. Even if you’re not new, it’s a big institution with lots of moving parts so this might be the place to help re-ground yourself.

The online ECR induction is designed to help new ECRs (or any ECRs) by providing essential resources. The induction covers topics such as:

The ECR network
Finding Faculty Research Support
Getting funded
Designing your research profile
Managing your data.

Alfred Research Alliance EMCR Event Series 2022: Changing lanes – navigating different career paths in academia, industry and beyond.

  • Thursday 21 July from 12.30-1.30pm.

This event has been created in response to feedback from many EMCRs on the Alfred precinct that they feel anxious about career opportunities in the traditional academic pathway but are unsure how to go about ‘changing lanes’ to industry-based roles.

The panel will be comprised of a senior researcher who has followed a more traditional academic trajectory, a senior executive who made the leap into industry also immediately after her PhD and one who worked in research and then moved into an industry role later in her career.

The aim is not to promote one pathway more than another, but simply to have a frank and open discussion about the benefits and challenges of different career pathways and the lessons our panellists have learnt along the way.

Register via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/a-emcr-event-series-changing-lanes-academia-industry-and-beyond-tickets-372599263427.

The symposium is a virtual event

Showcasing the latest developments in basic, translational, and clinical cancer research, this one-day virtual event especially for Post Docs is a great opportunity for professional development and networking nationally.

Postdoctoral researchers from across Australia are encouraged to attend this popular, free annual symposium.

This is a unique opportunity to share and learn the latest developments across a wide array of cancer research, including basic biology, translational research, molecular pathology, bioinformatics, psychosocial oncology, epidemiology, clinical trials, genomics and immunology.

Featuring plenary lectures, talks and flash talks, this conference provides an excellent forum for postdoctoral researchers to share data, discover new fields of research, and forge connections with both like-minded and unexpected future collaborators.

The VCCC Alliance Post-Doc Symposium aims to increase the visibility of post-doc research in Australia and is committed to diversity and equality in our community.

This year's event will officially open with a prestigious new plenary session, the Tony Burgess Oration, to be held on the eve of the symposium and broadcast live to delegates from the VCCC building. Find out everything you need to know and how to apply for the Inaugural Professor Tony Burgess Medal.

MNHS Prizes and Awards Website

The FRO has set up a new Prizes and Awards website that we would like to promote to all levels of researchers in the faculty and encourage more applications from each school.

Our aim is to update the website as more information on P&A becomes available later in the year. The FRO can also provide general administrative support to potential applicants and proofread the relevant parts of their applications.

Specific opportunities for EMCRs are well represented here so this is another resource to keep eyes on frequently.
