Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are rare genetic disorders of the immune system. Patients present with severe and recurrent infections which cannot be controlled without intervention, resulting in permanent organ damage or early mortality.

There are several barriers to PID diagnosis including limited availability of diagnostic tests, delay in diagnosis and lack of clinician awareness.

The JMF Immunodeficiency Centre will be part of the JMF global network of specialised physicians and researchers. It is the first multi-institute research, diagnostic and education centre in Australasia dedicated to patients suffering PIDs. Monash University scientist Associate Professor Menno van Zelm from the Department of Immunology and Pathology will lead the centre. It will combine the expertise of immunologists, researchers and clinicians to achieve patient oriented aims, including newborn screening, improved diagnostic tools and research into the disorders.
