MAPrc researcher finalist in Bupa Award!

Dr Gemma Sharp
Congratulations Dr Gemma Sharp, one of five national finalists in this year's Bupa Health Foundation Emerging Health Researcher Award!

Dr Sharp is an NHMRC Early Career Fellow and Clinical Psychologist in the Women’s Mental Health division of MAPrc. Her research focuses on the causes and novel treatments of body image concerns which can lead to really serious disorders like eating disorders and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Her latest project is developing a "chatbot", a computer program that can have human-like conversations with people in real time. The program is designed to go on social media platforms, where the bulk of the negative body image concerns occur. Combining her clinical expertise with research knowledge, Dr Sharp aims to counter these negative messages with positive ones.

"I want to see a day come, when we're not judging people for how much they weigh, or what they look like, or that body image concerns are normal, that eating disorders are glamorous. I want to see a day where that is not the case."
