Participants sought: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and dietary salicylates

Volunteers are sought by the Department of Gastroenterology, Monash University for a dietary study and research study entailing respectively the consumption of a diet low or high in natural salicylates for 4 weeks (all meals provided), and a diagnostic salicylate test. Salicylates are chemicals that occur naturally in many plants to protect the plants against insects and diseases.

 The trials involve:

a) Study on dietary treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). You may be suitable to take part in the dietary study if you

• are 18 years or older
• experience IBS symptoms including abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation

The study will involve:

• consuming a diet low or high in natural salicylates for 4 weeks (all meals provided)
• collecting a single blood sample and completing food and symptom diaries.

b) Study of a diagnostic salicylate test. You may be suitable to take part in the research study if you

• are 18 years or older
• have Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD) with asthmatic symptoms on consumption of Aspirin

The study will involve collecting 12ml of blood sample.
