Monash researchers show drug may prevent diabetes-induced vision loss

Scientists in Monash University’s Department of Diabetes have demonstrated that a novel drug that suppresses oxidative stress protects the retina against diabetes-induced damage and may prevent vision loss.

Globally, an estimated 70 million people have retinopathy caused by diabetes. The disease is the leading cause of blindness in young adults.

People with diabetes have high levels of glucose in their blood which stimulates oxidative stress, a process that causes damage to many cell types and ultimately cell death.

Lilliana Bowen is an Honours student in the Department of Diabetes where Associate Professor Melinda Coughlan supervises her. Lilliana completed a Bachelor of Science at Monash University. Lilliana was the 2018 recipient of the AMREP Honours Scholarship, one of two annual recipients.

Congratulations to two of our recent PhD graduates, Aron Hill and Fabien Vincent!

Fabien Vincent

Aron Hill was conferred with his PhD award in March of this year. The thesis is titled, "A neurophysiological investigation into optimised approaches to transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for neurocognitive enhancement". Aron was supervised by A/Prof Kate Hoy, Prof Paul Fitzgerald, Dr Nigel Rogasch, Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre. See more about Aron's research in a profile feature.

Fabien Vincent (right) likewise received his PhD award in March. His thesis is titled, "The BAFF/APRIL system: emerging new and unappreciated biomarkers in autoimmunity​". His supervisors were Prof Fabienne Mackay (previously Head of the Monash University Department of Immunology and Pathology) and Prof Eric Morand (Head, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health).
