Congratulations to Associate Professor Judy de Haan who has been awarded a five-year Baker Fellowship (2017-2022) by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where she leads the Oxidative Stress Laboratory.

The Fellowship will enable Associate Professor de Haan to continue her work on diabetic cardiovascular complications.

“My research interests lie in novel approaches to limit oxidative stress and inflammation with an emphasis on host antioxidant defence pathways,” Associate Professor de Haan said. “This fellowship enables me to continue my close relationship with the Department of Diabetes at CCS where I hold an Honorary position.”

Professor Melissa Southey specialises in genetic and epigenetic factors which are responsible for cancer predisposition. Prof Southey is based at Monash Health and is the head of the Southey Laboratory at the University of Melbourne.

Young HIV researcher honoured

Dr Robert Gillies

Congratulations to Dr Robert Gillies, 25, who received the Victoria Day Award for Public and Community Service by a Younger Victorian!

Dr Gillies is a junior doctor at The Alfred, and works 60 hours a week on six social initiatives he has founded, including an organisation that arranges volunteer trips to remote Indigenous communities and the not-for-profit "HoMie" streetwear label and retail store employing people struggling with homelessness.

He is also a HIV researcher, having presented his research at the International AIDS Conference and the San Francisco Liver Conference.

"It's a tremendous honour, not just to me, but to the teams of volunteers that give up their time every single day to help raise awareness for the thousands of homeless people in our community," he said.

"Homelessness is just so on the doorstep, it's just in your face everyday so me and the people that started HoMie just absolutely felt that we had to do something more, and it just started by educating ourselves.

"I'm really hoping that we are able to leverage today's honour and recognition with potential future sponsors and volunteers and any help is greatly appreciated."

The Victorian of the Year honour has been awarded since 1995.

Congratulations to Dr Jae Young Lee on Dean's award for outstanding PhD thesis

Congratulations to recent CCS PhD graduate, Dr Jae Young Lee, who is the inaugural awardee of the Dean's Award for Doctoral Thesis Excellence 2016!

The award recognises Jae's outstanding PhD thesis, entitled "Targeting the molecular mechanisms of axonal degeneration, demyelination and remyelination in multiple sclerosis".

Jae's main supervisor was Dr Steven Petratos who will be attending to receive the award on Jae's behalf, as Jae is currently working in South Korea.

Congratulations to Matthew Snelson, Department of Diabetes, who won both critical and popular votes with his presentation on the effects of dietary advanced glycation endproducts on gut homeostasis and chronic kidney disease. He will go on to compete in the Faculty finals 13 July 2017, 1.30 - 3.30 pm, S3 Lecture Theatre, 16 Rainforest Walk, Monash University, Clayton campus.
