Paul Zimmet: A Voice for Diabetes

Professor Jonathan Shaw says after more than 50 years of working in the diabetes field, Professor Paul Zimmet continues to actively push the boundaries of our understanding of the condition. He writes:

"Paul Zimmet has been one of the leading figures, globally, in transforming the understanding and threat of diabetes from a Cinderella disease to a major plank of most governments’ health policies. His science, particularly a series of epidemiological studies, has been at the forefront of the campaign, but it is fueled by his genuine passion to improve the life of people with diabetes. After more than 50 years of working in the diabetes field, he continues to actively push the boundaries of our understanding of the condition."

Emily King is a PhD student in the Molecular Metabolism and Ageing Laboratory at the Baker Institute. She is supervised by Dr Brian Drew, Dr Anna Calkin and Dr Darren Henstridge. Emily completed a Bachelor of Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Sydney and moved to Melbourne to undertake her PhD in Philosophy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Emily has previously worked as a Medical Representative for Invida Pharmaceutical Holdings and as a Research Assistant at the Heart Research Institute.

An interview with Associate Professor Judy de Haan

Dietary antioxidants have captured the popular imagination as being necessary for good health but their benefit in fighting disease is still uncertain. Associate Professor Judy de Haan has devoted her career to studying the oxidative stress that antioxidants counter and says the answers are more complex than vitamins. 

Associate Professor de Haan, who heads the Oxidative Stress Laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and holds an Honorary position at CCS, was recently awarded a five-year Baker Fellowship. She brings us up-to-date with the lab’s investigations and future research directions the Fellowship will support.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Judy de Haan who has been awarded a five-year Baker Fellowship (2017-2022) by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where she leads the Oxidative Stress Laboratory.

The Fellowship will enable Associate Professor de Haan to continue her work on diabetic cardiovascular complications.

“My research interests lie in novel approaches to limit oxidative stress and inflammation with an emphasis on host antioxidant defence pathways,” Associate Professor de Haan said. “This fellowship enables me to continue my close relationship with the Department of Diabetes at CCS where I hold an Honorary position.”
