Professor Stephen Jane, newly
appointed Foundation Dean
|
The Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health is the second sub-faculty established within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, and comprises two existing Schools at the Alfred Hospital site - the CCS and the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
The Sub-Faculty will build on the vital synergy between the two Schools. Both play leading roles in translational, clinical, epidemiological and public health research for the faculty and the University. This is exemplified by the breadth and scale of clinical trial activity coordinated by the Schools (in excess of $30 million per annum), extending from first-in-human and first-in-disease drug and device studies, through investigator-initiated and pharma-sponsored trials, to large population-based international studies such as ASPREE (ASPrin in Reducing Events in the Elderly), funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Since 2011, Professor Jane has held a joint appointment as Head of Central Clinical School at Monash and Director of Research at The Alfred. The appointment has included additional roles as Acting Head of both the Clinical Haematology Division of The Alfred and the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases at Monash. His previous positions have included Director of the Bone Marrow Research Laboratories, Royal Melbourne Hospital Research Foundation, and research positions at the NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (USA) and St Jude's Children's Research Hospital (USA).
Enhanced by his experience in clinical haematology, Professor Jane's research has encompassed developmental and acquired disorders of the blood and skin. Recognised for his widely published research, Professor Jane has been a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Hematology since 2001, and a reviewer for international journals (including Nature) and research-funding bodies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Wellcome Trust. He has been awarded research grants from funding bodies including NHMRC, NIH (USA), and the Wellcome Trust.
A Monash alumnus, Professor Jane's academic qualifications comprise a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and a PhD in Medicine. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
Professor Jane's expertise and well-established leadership of the Central Clinical School and at The Alfred mean he is ideally placed to advance research and education excellence in Monash's Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health.
