Congratulations to Professor Terry O'Brien on his appointment as Head of Central Clinical School! Professor Christina Mitchell AO, Dean of Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences writes:
"It is my great pleasure to formally announce the appointment of Professor Terence (Terry) O’Brien as Head of School, Central Clinical School, following an international search.
"Professor O’Brien joined Monash University in 2017 as The Van Cleef Roet Professor of Medicine (Neurology), Head of Departments of Neuroscience and Medicine, and Deputy Head, Central Clinical School. In 2019, he became Acting Head of School, Central Clinical School. Professor O’Brien also holds current appointments with Alfred Health as Director of Neurology, Program Director Alfred Brain, and Deputy Director of Research.
"As founding head of Australia’s only dedicated academic department focused on basic and translational neurological research, Professor O’Brien has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Department of Neuroscience – increasing income, research and teaching activity to include 22 research groups and over 200 staff and students.
"Professor O’Brien is an expert in the field of neurology and clinical pharmacology and has been highly successful in obtaining competitive peer-reviewed research grant funding, both domestically and internationally. His outstanding achievements have earned Professor O'Brien considerable acclaim, including 17 awards for his research from national and international scientific bodies. He has published over 480 peer reviewed original papers, most of which have been in leading journals.
"Over the last two decades, Professor O’Brien has held a number of senior university, hospital and professional leadership roles, including The James Stewart Professor of Medicine and Head of Department of Medicine, The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) and The University of Melbourne, Chair and Assistant Dean, The RMH Academic Centre, and Head, The RMH Comprehensive Epilepsy Unit.
"Professor O’Brien’s leadership experience and excellence in research provide a strong platform for him to take on the leadership of the Central Clinical School.
