Professor Silvana Marasco |
I am delighted to announce that Professor Silvana Marasco has been appointed the head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Alfred. Silvana will be well known to many of you as she has been a medical student, trainee and senior consultant at the Alfred.
Silvana has also successfully completed a number of postgraduate degrees through Monash University including a Master of Surgery (2003), Grad Certificate in Health Services Management (2007), Master of Bioethics (2008) and PhD (2015). She has also had a most impressive academic career. In addition to receiving significant grant funding, she is widely published with more than 150 peer reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. She is a recognised international expert on rib fixation, one of her research interests. Other academic activities include clinical trials involvement, many invited lectures, supervision of postgraduate students and as a reviewer for a number of Journals.
Professor Marasco has also been active in bringing clinical innovations to the Alfred, including rib fixation and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. As a result, she has a very broad scope of surgical practice and is a senior leader of the heart and lung transplant/mechanical assist device team.
Silvana is a real role model for many of us, and I hope you will all join me in congratulating Silvana and wishing her all the very best in this new role.
Professor Wendy Brown
