2015 Day of Immunology events

To celebrate World Day of Immunology on 29 April 2015, a number of informative and enjoyable events are being held in Melbourne, to which all are welcome, including a free public lecture, free Discovery tours and a Vaccination cafe. Registration link.

Many thanks to our volunteers for the Day of Immunology expo held annually at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) at Parkville this coming Wednesday, 29 April. The event is very popular with more schools wanting to participate than can be accommodated. This year, the following people are helping out from the Monash Department of Immunology:

Research: A rare but serious cause of community-acquired pneumonia

Community-acquired Acinetobacter baumannii (CA-Ab) is a rare but serious cause of community-acquired pneumonia in tropical regions of the world. CA-Ab infections predominantly affect individuals with various risk factors and has a high mortality rate (reported up to 64%). Deepening our understanding of the drivers of overwhelming CA-Ab infection will provide important insights into preventive and therapeutic strategies.

Centre of Excellence in Traumatic Brain Injury (CETBIR)

Traumatic brain injuries in Australia, indeed around the world, create an enormous burden on individuals, families, communities and the economy.  Fortunately, there is a concerted effort being made by researchers around the world to decipher the derangements that occur at a cellular and molecular level in these injuries and in developing new therapies to improve the outcome from these injuries.

This short course will show participants how to develop a clinical research questions and create a concise protocol. Last year's pilot course was very successful.
