Win for “Citizen Science”: A/Prof Elliott awarded Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award

Congratulations to A/Prof Julian Elliott, who was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research 2017 at a ceremony in Melbourne on Thursday night. The medal is bestowed annually to the top-ranked Career Development Fellowship applicant through the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common yet serious disorder in which obstruction of the throat (upper airway) causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start, resulting in fragmented sleep, sleep deprivation, daytime tiredness and leaving OSA patients liable to a number of health risks.

Curiously, although obesity is the strongest risk factor for developing OSA, weight loss – while it can improve the severity of OSA – rarely cures it.

Congratulations to Gulcan Sarila on her PhD!

Congratulations to Gulcan Sarila on the completion of her PhD! Gulcan's thesis title is, "Role of histone methyltransferase Set7 in cardiac gene regulation and mitochondrial function”, and she was supervised by Professor Sam El-Osta and Dr Jun Okabe. Gulcan is continuing to work with Sam El-Osta as a postdoctoral research fellow.

AMREP Precinct Manager Gavin Horrigan had a huge day shooting at Ararat on Saturday 3 June. He didn’t miss a single target in three events totalling seventy (70) targets!
