It gives me great pleasure and excitement to announce the recruitment Dr Yet Hong Khor to the academic Monash University appointment as Associate Professor and NHMRC Investigator Grant Emerging Leadership Fellow in the Respiratory Research@Alfred section of the Department of Immunology and Pathology in the Central Clinical School. 

Yet is an outstanding early career clinical respiratory researcher, who has a rapidly emerging research trajectory and profile for her clinical research into chronic lung disease.

Respiratory Research@Alfred an international host centre for European Union

The Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred within the Central Clinical School is now a registered host institution for the European Respiratory Society's (ERS) REspiratory Science Promoted by International Research Exchanges 4 (RESPIRE4) fellowship program.

Professor Anne Holland and Professor Glen Westall are heading the initiative. Prof Holland said, "Essentially it means that people from the European Union can apply to come and do a respiratory postdoc fellowship with us at CCS." The application round closes 1 May.

The ERS fellowship program offers a platform for early career researchers to develop their skills in an international environment and supports fellows on their journey to becoming future leaders in the respiratory field. The RESPIRE4 fellowship program receives funding from the European Union's (EU) Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions grant agreement No 847462 (MSCA COFUND scheme).

Professor Anne Holland awarded ERS medal

Congratulations to Professor Anne Holland, Head of Respiratory Research@Alfred, whose outstanding research and clinical leadership in the allied health field of physiotherapy has been recognised by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) with the award of the ERS Mid-Career Gold Medal for Allied Health Professionals.

Congratulations to Arwel Jones and Narelle Cox on Lung Foundation Australia grants

Congratulations to Dr Arwel Jones and Dr Narelle Cox in the Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred, Monash University,who have both won Lung Foundation Australia (LFA) grants.

The LFA awarded a total of $876,000 to 13 research grants from the Hope Research Fund in several different research areas, including asthma, bronchiectasis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), and lung cancer.

It is with great pride that I can inform you that Prof Anne Holland, Head of Respiratory Research@Alfred, CCS, was awarded the Monash Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Engagement and Impact. This highly prestigious award recognises Anne’s sustained, impactful research developing and trialling in-home rehabilitation as a way to improve access for patients with chronic lung disease, providing an alternative to the traditional in-person delivery at outpatient facilities. Her work has resulted in a transformative shift of clinical practice towards a more integrated model of disease management (in-person and at-home via web-based platforms), as demonstrated by its citation in 27 clinical guidelines and position papers on pulmonary rehabilitation, pulmonary fibrosis, COPD, skeletal muscle dysfunction, oxygen therapy and respiratory management, from eminent bodies including the Thoracic Societies in the UK, USA, Europe, Asia and Australia/New Zealand.

Congratulations to Professor Anne Holland, Head of the Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred in Central Clinical School, who has been appointed as the President-Elect for the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ). 

The TSANZ is the peak body representing health professionals and researchers working in respiratory medicine, with key roles in advancing clinical practice, research and advocacy for respiratory health in Australia and New Zealand. 

Prof Holland will be the first allied health professional to serve as President of TSANZ. She will serve a 2- year term as President, beginning in March 2023.

Congratulations to our National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator grant recipients in Central Clinical School (CCS) Dr Narelle Cox, Associate Professor Gemma Sharp and Professor Karin Jandeleit-Dahm.

Dr Narelle Cox's (Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred) EL2 project is "Improving access to non-pharmacological treatment in chronic respiratory disease", and has been awarded $1,526,390 

Associate Professor Gemma Sharp's (Department of Neuroscience) EL2 project is "Smartphone sensors: Predicting changes in mental health and delivering "just in time" interventions", and has been awarded $1,526,390 

Body image concerns impact more than a third of young people and are linked with eating disorders, anxiety, depression and suicidality. This program of research will harness the popularity of smartphones to predict when young people are struggling with their body image from the way they are using their phones, and provide the right level of personalised support via “just in time” online interventions. If effective, this work will translate into improved body image for at-risk young people. 

Professor Karin Jandeleit-Dahm's (Department of Diabetes) L2 project is "Reducing the burden of diabetic complications" and has been awarded $2,382,170

Congratulations to Professor Anne Holland, Head of the Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred, who won the Dean's Award for Excellence in Research - Engagement and Impact. An NHMRC Leadership Fellow (2021-2025), Professor Holland's research program investigates supportive therapies for people with chronic respiratory disease, with a focus on COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. Her recent clinical trials have tested new models of pulmonary rehabilitation to improve access and uptake, including low cost home-based models and telerehabilitation. Professor Holland is currently leading a multi-national trial of ambulatory oxygen for people with fibrotic lung disease. Anne is a Chief Investigator for the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis and the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Treatable Traits.
