Sir Ronald Ross on why physiology is fundamental and the usefulness of negative results in medical research

Sir Ronald Ross

Sir Ronald Ross, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1902 for his discovery of the malaria parasite, wrote in 1881 in a short story titled 'The Vivisector':

 "I [am] convinced of the necessity for a better knowledge of Physiology; for unless we know the working of a watch or machine, how can we hope to mend it? Truly hot oil poured in may do good; but it can also possibly clog the wheels. Hygiene is the better part of medicine; physiology, the best part of both: for without it we put on spectacles in the dark."

Ross also put his finger on how both negative and positive results in scientific research are needed, when he has one of the physiologists exclaiming as they are about to embark on their experiment, "Now... we shall get at least some knowledge; either a useful negative result, or a world-reforming fact." Notice he puts 'useful negative result' first.

Leukemia gene discovery

PhD student Ms Sewa Rijal (Australian Centre for Blood Diseases) and her supervisor Dr Andrew Wei, from the Alfred Hospital, are respectively first and last authors on a paper published in the journal Blood last week.

The  group of researchers found that when the protein INPP4B was found in patients with leukemia, they did not respond to chemotherapy. Sewa told ABC, "[T]his protein can be used as another biomarker of the disease... [W]e're focusing on how it acts in leukemic cells to cause chemoresistance. So if we can find out how it works, then we can target the protein and the pathway to then treat acute myeloid leukemia more effectively."

BioMedVic Media Training Scholarships for EMCRs

Biomedical Research Victoria is pleased to offer up to 6 fully-supported places for EMCRs from BioMedVic Members to participate in a one-day media training workshop for scientists to be held on Tuesday 14 April 2015, from 8.30 am to 5 pm in the Club Melbourne Boardroom at the Melbourne Convention Centre.
