Medical student creativity shines in AXM logo competition

AXM, the innovative learning tool for medical students developed by Monash University is now the proud owner of its very own logo! (see below)
A competition was held for medical students to get creative and design a logo for AXM. AXM was launched in mid-2014 and is currently being used by over 200 third year medical students across Victoria. A total of 49 entries from 16 medical students were submitted and presented a very tough job for the judging panel!

Journal of Autoimmunity selects Immunology paper for highlight

Congratulations to the Department of Immunology authors for the selection of their paper “BAFF-driven autoimmunity requires CD19 expression” for being made free access and highlighted on the homepage Journal of Autoimmunity for six months.Journal of Autoimmunity.

Publication: The unique symptom profile of perimenopausal depression

Perimenopause is associated with increased depression symptoms in women. Symptoms at this time are thought to be qualitatively different from those in childbearing years. This research investigated whether depressive symptoms during perimenopause can be distinguished from those in the childbearing years.

Publication: What modulates the oxidative stress response in pathogenic microorganisms?

Sirtuins are an ancient family of NAD+-dependent deacylases connected with the regulation of fundamental cellular processes including metabolic homeostasis and genome integrity. We show the existence of a hitherto unrecognized class of sirtuins, found predominantly in microbial pathogens. In contrast to earlier described classes, these sirtuins exhibit robust protein ADP-ribosylation activity.

Photo of the Week: Eureka award finalist for mental health diagnostic innovation

The EVestigator team from the Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc) and Neural Diagnostics Pty Ltd (NDPL), led by Professors Jayashri Kulkarni and Brian Lithgow, is shortlisted for the Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research. Winners will be announced on 26 August. 

In an industry alliance with NDPL, Prof Brian Lithgow’s EVestG invention was clinically evaluated at MAPrc. They have discovered for the first time that brainwave features recorded from the balance organ contain biomarker features that allow for an earlier, objective and more accurate diagnosis of mental and neurological conditions.  

In 2015, evidence was published in the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry on being able to classify those with major depression with over 80% accuracy within 1 hour of measurement using EVestG.
