Paul has a lifelong interest in diabetes, starting with his PhD. He was also a pioneer in the epidemiology of diabetes, being the first WHO appointment invited to survey various Pacific island nation populations. In 1984, he founded the International Diabetes Institute which merged with the Baker Institute in 2008, becoming the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. Paul’s research predicted and has charted the evolving global type 2 diabetes epidemic.
