This is provided by a joint initiative between the CCS OH&S team and the CCS GEDI committee, to encourage us to take a stroll with our colleagues around Fawkner Park and start a conversation that could change a life. Please register here.

If you feel like something’s up with someone you know, trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them how they’re going.

You don’t need to be an expert to ask someone if they are OK, a small conversation is all it takes to check in. Have you noticed any unusual behaviour from a workmate, family member or friend? These are the people we spend most of our time surrounded by, making us well-placed to be the ones to notice any changes in their behaviour, giving us an indication that they might be struggling and could do with some extra support.

What do you do if someone isn't OK?

It’s important to listen without judgement. Avoid saying things such as, “I know what you're going through” or “Look on the bright side”.

We might think that we’re being helpful with these kinds of statements, but it can make them feel worse about the situation and feel that what they are going through isn’t important.

Instead, say things such as:

  • “You’re not alone”
  • “How can I help you?”
  • “I’m here for you and want to listen to what you have to say”

Help them think of one small step they could take to improve their situation. It could be going to see their doctor or psychologist if they have been feeling really low for more than 2 weeks.

R U OK? is a national suicide prevention charity dedicated to encouraging and empowering everyone to ask “Are you OK?” of anyone struggling with life.
