World first midlife twin study reveals simple eye test could predict dementia

A world first study mapping the thickness of the layers of the retina in 18 pairs of twins at midlife has found that it could be a marker of future dementia risk.

The paper, led by Associate Professor Christopher Moran and Professor Velandai Srikanth, from the National Centre for Healthy Ageing in Australia, and published in the journal, Scientific Reports, tested 18 pairs of twins recruited from Twins Research Australia, average age of 64 years and two thirds female.

Minister Hunt opens new facilities for healthy ageing research

The National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) has a new home located within the brand-new purpose-built Ngarnga (pronounced Nun-Run-Gah) Centre research facilities at Frankston Hospital, officially opened 1 March 2022 by Commonwealth Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt.
 
The multi-million dollar centre was made possible through a partnership between Monash University and Peninsula Health, which included a $2 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government for a dedicated space to house the NCHA Healthy Ageing Data Platform.
