What causes chronic fatigue? What we know, don’t know and suspect

Around 200,000 people in Australia suffer from a debilitating illness often branded with the unfortunate name of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). I say “unfortunate” because this implies patients are simply tired, run-down, burnt-out or overly stressed.

But myalgic encephalomyelitis, or ME/CFS as it is now more commonly called, is a serious and incapacitating disease that can have a devastating impact on a patient’s life.

Developing therapies for the toughest of blood cancers

Dr Donia Moujalled, Research Fellow, Australian Centre for
Blood Diseases

Dr Donia Moujalled is a post-doctoral research fellow in Associate Professor Andrew Wei's Leukemia Translational Research Group at the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD). She received funding from Cancer Council Victoria for a project grant as sole chief investigator, valued at $300,000 (for 3 years, 2018-2020).

The project title is 'Targeting Survival programs in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia'. Donia is working on Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a haematological malignancy that has a poor prognosis due to resistance to current therapies and to relapse.

Congratulations to Daniel So on DAA Award!

Congratulations to Mr Daniel So, Department of Gastroenterology, who was awarded with the 'New Conference Presenter Award', as 'Highly Commended'. Daniel presented the findings of the recently published meta-analysis of dietary fibre and the gut microbiota at the national conference for the Dietitians Association of Australia.

Visit from Professor Tomasz Guzik to Diabetes Department

The Department of Diabetes recently hosted a visit from a distinguished researcher and collaborator, Professor Tomasz Guzik. Prof Guzik is a cardiologist and physiologist and the Regius Professor of Physiology at the University of Glasgow. He is also Chief Editor of the journal Cardiovascular Research. He recently presented at the Department of Diabetes Meeting and is an active collaborator of Prof Karin Jandeleit-Dahm's group on her work of NOX (NDAPH oxidase family enzymes) in cardiovascular disease. NOXs are implicated in the pathophysiology of many cardiovascular diseases.
