Congratulations to Professor Anton Peleg for winning the Australian Society of Microbiology’s (ASM) 2018 Frank Fenner Award!

Professor Peleg was honoured with the ASM's top research award at the ASM Annual Scientific meeting in Brisbane this month. One of the leading awards in microbiology in Australia, it recognises distinguished contributions in any area of Australian research in microbiology.

Congratulations to Mrs Judith Moore and Mr Pacific Huynh our recent PhD graduates!

Department of Diabetes candidate Pacific Huynh received his PhD award on 18 July 2018 for his thesis, "The role of CDA1 in an Experimental Model of  Diabetes-Associated Renal Fibrosis".  Pacific was supervised by Dr Zhong-Lin Chai.

Julidth Moore, Department of Gastroenterology candidate, likewise was awarded her PhD on 18 July for her thesis, "Novel interventional strategies for chronic constipation".  Judith's supervisors were
Dr Rebecca Burgell and Prof Peter Gibson.

Eye on GEDI: Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at CCS

27 August 2018 Multicultural lunch hosted by GEDI

Thank you to all CCS Staff & Students who have completed the CCS Gender Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (GEDI) survey.  We have had 37 responses so far that have provided the committee with feedback on current issues of concern around the School and suggestions of future committee activities. We will be following up on the issues that have been raised so far.  The short survey is still open - please find link on the CCS intranet GEDI page - and we encourage all CCS staff and students to complete this survey.

During Diversity and Inclusion week (Aug 27 - 31), the GEDI committee will be hosting a multicultural lunch in the AMREP foyer on Monday 27 August from 1.30 - 2.30pm.  This will be a great opportunity to engage with CCS staff and students, meet the GEDI committee and learn more about CCS and Monash initiatives that celebrate and recognise diversity and inclusion. There will be more information in the CCS blog - look out for the Eye on GEDI section.

Australia’s first dedicated Blood Cancer Therapeutics Centre launched

The Alfred and Monash University have established a dedicated centre for Blood Cancer Therapeutics Research, thanks to a $1.2 million grant from the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). The grant was awarded to a team of haematologists led by Associate Professor Andrew Wei, and Professors Andrew Spencer, David Curtis and Stephen Jane, and the centre was officially launched on Tuesday 24 July 2018.

The opening launch of the Jeffrey Modell Foundation Centre for Primary Immunodeficiencies Melbourne was held on the 14th June 2018. The plaque is being unveiled here by various community and health care provider representatives
