How a very simple test can help clinicians see subtle cognitive changes in multiple sclerosis

L-R: Dr Daniel Merlo , Prof Helmut Butzkueven and A/Prof Anneke
Van Der Walt
are first and senior authors on a paper describing a tool
they have developed for assessing cognitive function in MS.
More than 50% of people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience cognitive problems as part of their disease. These cognitive problems subtly worsen with time and can be difficult to measure with standard neuropsychological assessments. Hence, it can be challenging for neurologists to monitor and detect small changes in cognitive function in day-to-day practice.

Monash researchers have developed a simple set of tests to detect subtle changes in cognitive function in people living with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The tests are collectively known as ‘MSReactor’.

The immunisation status of patients newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) must not be overlooked when beginning treatment with immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), according to the authors of a Perspective published 19 April by the Medical Journal of Australia.

“Determining immunisation status when commencing DMTs is key, as is an individualised approach to risk–benefit assessment when considering vaccinations,” wrote the authors, led by Dr Cassie Nesbitt, a neurologist at Alfred Health in Melbourne.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that attacks the myelin sheath covering nerves. It can be detected on MRI scans as lesions present in the brain and spinal cord. It is a disease that is chronic, so treatment is required on an ongoing basis to prevent relapses or flares.

During 2020's COVID-19 lockdowns this proved to be a challenge, but one which the Monash-Alfred Health Multiple Sclerosis Neuroimmunology (MSNI) Clinic team met.

MS Research Australia offers vital funding for new treatments

L-R: Dr Mastura Monif, A/Prof Anneke van der Walt, Dr Lisa Grech
Three Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences researchers - Dr Mastura Monif, Associate Professor Anneke Van Der Walt (both in Department of Neuroscience, Central Clinical School) and Dr Lisa Grech (Department of Medicine, Monash Health) - have received funding grants as part of MS Research Australia’s $2.9M funding boost, which will help uncover new ways to investigate, manage and treat multiple sclerosis (MS). See more about their grants below.

MS is a complex condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It affects over 25,600 people in Australia.

12 August event: From the Frontline: Clinical Impacts of COVID-19

Monash’s Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences proudly presents From the Frontline: Clinical Impacts of COVID-19.

In this free online event, we’ll explore the impact COVID-19 has had on healthcare and what the ‘new normal’ will look like post-pandemic.

Hear from our panel of experts (Prof Jane Fisher, A/Prof Julian Elliott, Prof Merlin Thomas and A/Prof Anneke van der Walt) who are leading clinician-researchers based on the frontline of our hospitals and research facilities. They’ll discuss their COVID-19 research, focus areas, and how these will impact our community.

This year your CCS Neuroscience MS researchers have put together a hilarious video for the 'Kiss Goodbye to MS' campaign to raise awareness and funds. The video is part of the 'Battle of the Labs', and Helmut Butzkueven, Vilija Jokabaitis, Mastura Monif, Steven Petratos and Anneke van der Walt would love you to vote for it. They want to win the surprise prize!

Please share the link with all your family, friends and colleagues, ask them to ‘kiss’ (vote) for their favourite and post on your social media using the attached social tiles and the #KissGoodbyeToMS and #RedLabCoatDay hashtags.
