CCS staff home-schooling during lockdown: Sign up here
From Professor Robyn Slattery

Dear colleagues and extended Monash community,

We are seeking your time for approximately one hour per month (take the survey here) to support our Monash parent community.  Home-schooling parents, juggling professional commitments are perhaps the most impacted by extended lockdown.  This disproportionately affects our early career colleagues and graduate students -- most profoundly those with children in prep - grade 2.

Mapping the impacts of the COVID -19 pandemic on the medical research workforce

The 2020 CCS GEDI committee authored the survey to assess
the pandemic's impacts on medical researchers. See CCS intranet
“We are all in this together” was the rallying call of our political leaders regarding the effects of the pandemic and our responses to it. The Central Clinical School's Gender Equity Diversity and Inclusion (CCS GEDI) committee teased out the specifics with a survey to map the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on CCS's  medical research workforce. They discovered both positive and negative impacts on medical researchers, some immediate and some with a much longer tail.

Humour and acceptance most helpful during lockdown

Associate Professor Caroline Gurvich
is lead author on the study
A Monash survey finds that humour and acceptance, rather than venting and denial, are helping us get through lockdown.

It's ancient folk wisdom, that "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine", and it is borne out by research on coping strategies during the current pandemic.

According to a comprehensive Monash University study of more than 1500 Australians over one month during the first national lockdown, humour and acceptance of the current COVID-19 impacts are far more likely to assist in promoting mental health than venting or trying to distract yourself about what is happening in the world.

Have your say on how we do the CCS enews!

How often should the enews be circulated?
Over half our respondents (so far) prefer a
fortnightly issue, one third would like it
weekly, and 14.6% would prefer monthly.
Have your say and take our 1-2 min survey
We are reviewing the way we let you know about Central Clinical School researchers, their projects and achievements. Our survey to give your feedback is still open. (Take the 1-2 min CCS enews survey here). Many thanks to those who responded to our survey - much appreciated! What we have so far learned from your responses in summary is that:

  • you mostly like all the content provided 😊
  • you'd like to see more grant opportunities💲 and event notices
  • the news is useful for updating you, sharing with others and promoting collaborations🤝
  • Over half the respondents would prefer fortnightly rather than weekly output.
