Every year, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trials Network (ANZCA CTN) celebrates International Clinical Trials Day to recognise the outstanding contribution of our ANZCA and Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) fellows, trainees and research coordinators to investigator-led clinical trials in anaesthesia, pain and perioperative medicine. International Clinical Trials Day is held on 20 May each year to commemorate James Lind’s trials on scurvy in 1747, which is the first known clinical trial in history.

The steroid drug, dexamethasone, is often given by anaesthetists during surgery.  However, because of its effects on the immune system there has been growing concern that it may increase the risk of wound infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as patients with diabetes.

Anaesethesia Research Co-ordinators Network virtual workshop a success!

A sub-group of the  Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trials Network (ANZCA CTN), the Anaesthesia Research Co-ordinators Network had their second virtual workshop on 17 March. 

More than 80 delegates joined online from across Australia and New Zealand to hear the latest on the achievements of the network by ARCN Sub-committee chair and Monash University affiliate, Ms Allison Kearney, from Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Elective surgery patients screened for COVID-19

A recent COVID-19 research project involving Monash University, ANZCA’s Clinical Trials Network and Australian National University has seen elective surgery patients in 14 Australian hospitals screened for COVID-19 in hospital to establish infection rates and manage surgical risk.

Friday 16 October is National Anaesthesia Day. 2020 has seen unusual stresses and challenges, and the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trials Network (ANZCA CTN) is sharing how they have been met to honour the achievements of all the groups involved. Central Clinical School has recently become home to the ANZCA CTN, and we extend a warm welcome to the CCS team.

Running workshops virtually works well with inventive adaptations. 90+ people
took part in the ANZCA Anaesthesia Research Coordinators Network workshop.

Last week, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) kicked off a series of free virtual workshops in lieu of their annual face-to-face Strategic Research Workshop.

The inaugural Anaesthesia Research Coordinators Network (ARCN) virtual workshop was the first of three virtual workshops to take place over the next couple of months, and was characterised by full and inventive use of the Zoom platform features.
